All the evidence suggests that work is good for you. This may seem counter intuitive, but those people who are in work enjoy more favourable physical and mental health outcomes than those who are workless.

This premise forms the central theme to the recent review of the health of the working age population undertaken by Dame Carol Black, the first National Director for Health and Work. Her report has estimated the cost of ill health at around £100 billion a year. This is equivalent to running another NHS.  Clearly, this is an unsustainable burden on UK PLC in these uncertain economic times. Carol made a number of radical proposals in her review and the Government responded last November accepting all her recommendations. Work is now progressing to make these a reality.

It is clear from both Dame Carol's report and the Government's response that there is an expectation that the public sector, including local government, will be exemplars in promoting the themes of health, work and well-being.

This event provides an opportunity to hear from Dame Carol herself on the challenges that this agenda poses for the public sector and what she thinks the priorities for the future should be and from Lord McKenzie of Luton, Parliamentary Undersecretary of State Department for Work and Pensions
and a Minister in the Department for Communities and Local Government, who will report on Government's progress one year on.

Other speakers include:
>
Graeme Henderson from the Department of Health who will describe the fit for work programme and progress to date
> Dr Steve Boorman, Director for Corporate Social Responsibility, Royal Mail who will be talking about his review of health and well being in the NHS and the outcomes which can be relevant across the public sector
> Steve Sumner OBE, Safety and Well-being Policy Adviser, Local Government
Employers

There will also be an opportunity to hear local government well being case studies both from within the region and more widely
